Town have to settle for point after McGoldrick denied in last minute

Jed Steer earned his side a point with a vital save in added on time to deny David McGoldrick from close range as Town were held by a resolute Huddersfield at Portman Road.

The ‘keeper stuck out his left foot to divert the Republic of Ireland international’s shot from six yards away from goal as Blues threatened a winner.

Town needed Christophe Berra’s goalline clearance in the first-half and a terrific save from Dean Gerken late on to keep the scores level in what was probably a fair result.

Huddersfield finished the game with 10 men after James Vaughan was sent-off for throwing the ball at Jonas Knudsen.

Town made three changes to the side that went down at Blackburn before the international break, Tommy Oar coming in for his home debut, with Brett Pitman and Knudsen returning to the side.

Blues started brightly with Ainsley Maitland-Niles surging into the box but Huddersfield also carried an early threat and it needed an excellent block from Christophe Berra to keep put Ishmael Miller’s shot.

Miller then dragged a left foot effort wide of the far post after the Terriers countered, Tommy Smith then doing well to keep out the threatening Miller.

Harry Bunn’s cross was cleared by Smith as Nahki Wells looked to take advantage, Gerken then ending the danger from Sean Scannell’s delivery.

Martin Cranie was in the right place to clear from Pitman after Maitland-Niles had set him up, then Berra was in an even more important position - on the goalline - to prevent Wells’ lob crossing the line.

Cole Skuse did superbly to rob Scannell inside the box as the Terrier burst towards goal, Oar’s wicked free-kick headed away by Mark Hudson as Freddie Sears looked to get in to end a first-half of few chances.

McGoldrick replaced Oar at the break in Town’s first change, the frontman almost releasing the breaking Luke Chambers with a 50 yard crossfield pass.

McGoldrick couldn’t get enough power on a 20 yard strike at Steer, Hudson at full stretch to clear from Sears’ cross at the other end.

Striker McGoldrick blitzed a 35 yarder over the bar as Town searched for that all important first goal, the visitors making their first change with Mustapha Carayol on for Scannell. Daryl Murphy on for Pitman at the same time.

Murphy was instantly into the action with a terrific touch, Sears testing Steer with a low drive from the edge of the box.

Joel Lynch headed over at the near post from a corner, Jonathan Douglas doing the same at the other end from Maitland-Niles.

Gerken produced a terrific save to keep out Huws’ left footer, Lynch hooking the ball over the bar after Wells was first to the rebound before McGoldrick looked set to grab a winner until Steer’s left foot took centre stage.

Vaughan was dismissed seconds before the final whistle after throwing the ball at Knudsen in what was the first goalless draw at Portman Road since January.
