Defeat at Griffin Park as two John Egan goals sink the Blues at Brentford

Two second-half goals from John Egan gave Brentford the points after Town had gone in at the break the better side.

Conor Grant and Grant Ward both went close for Blues early on but three minutes after half-time, Egan was left alone to head in from a corner.

The Bees defender made it two soon after from close range and Brentford were rarely tested after that with Ward’s acrobatic volley the only threat on the home goal as
Town suffered a first League defeat of the season.

Grant and Ward were handed their first League starts for Town after impressing in last week’s opening day win over Barnsley and Ward almost followed up his hat-trick in that game with a goal inside a minute, his strike from the edge of the box saved low down by Daniel Bentley.

Luke Chambers cleared, then Scott Hogan burst down the right and cut inside but his cross fell to Ward who ended the danger following a flurry of pressure from the home side.

Bart Bialkowski held firm from Josh Clarke’s cross, then at the other end Grant sent a free-kick just over from 25 yards.

Hogan almost got on the end of Romaine Sawyers’ pass but Town continued to carry a threat, Grant’s fierce strike pushed on to the near post by Bentley, then Christophe Berra headed over from the resultant corner.

Town were inches away from finding the net gain when Jonas Knudsen crossed from the left, Ward couldn’t force the ball in, the rebound cannoning back off Freddie Sears and going behind.

Berra couldn’t get any direction on his header from Grant’s corner, Bialkowski quickly off him line to save from Hogan.

Brentford then had a gilt edged chance to open the scoring on the half hour, Ryan Woods sliding the ball through the right channel for Clarke but he blasted his shot well wide from inside the box.

Cole Skuse released Daryl Murphy with a clever pass, the Republic of Ireland international’s cross was destined for Sears until Harlee Dean intervened.

Lewis Macleod had the home fans on their feet with a right foot drive that was inches wide, then Sears tried to find the corner from the edge of the box but his radar was off as a lively first-half came to an end in a stalemate.

Berra’s diving header cleared the danger inside the two minutes of the second-half but from the corner, the home side were ahead, Egan left alone to head in.

Macleod forced a save from Bialkowski as Brentford looked for a second, Nico Yennaris then seeing his shot beaten out by Adam Webster.

Egan grabbed his second on 56 minutes, Yennaris’ fierce drive was saved low down by Bialkowski but the defender was in the right place to sidefoot the ball home from eight yards.

Berra headed over as Town looked for an immediate response, then Ward’s acrobatic volley flew just wide.

A brilliant block from Webster stopped Yennaris’ shot when it looked goalbound, Town then making a change with Teddy Bishop on for Grant.

Macleod’s shot was tipped over well by Bialkowski, Sears and Bishop then linking up well down the right, Ward throwing himself at the cross but just failing to divert it goalwards.

Macleod looked to take advantage of Bialkowski’s miscued clearance but the Polish ‘keeper quickly retreated to catch the midfielder’s long range effort as Brentford looked more likely to add to the scoreline then Town reduce it.

Jonathan Douglas replaced Kevin Bru for the closing stages and showed a neat touch to turn inside the home box but he couldn’t get any power in his shot. Sam
Saunders got plenty in his soon after following a good move but he lacked direction, the ball going high over the bar.

The influential Woods curled a right footer wide from 20 yards in the last effort of note as Brentford eased their way to the three points.
