TOWN 2 C.PALACE 0

Posted on: Sat 12 Dec 2009

Goals from Billy Clark and Jamie Griffiths saw Town take the points in what was a tightly contested and physical encounter.

Palace started the stronger of the two sides and had a great chance of scoring the opener in the fourth minute when Jake Caprice found himself with the ball in front of goal but a great one handed save from Mirko Ranieri saw the shot deflected over the bar.

Three minutes later and Palace were knocking on the door again, this time to a free- kick that fell to Jay Hollany inside the box but his effort was for a corner.

Town then began finding their feet and after a good first touch saw Josh Carson broke down the left side but his low driven cross couldn't be converted by Luke Hyam.

Palace then had another great opportunity to break the deadlock but Taureen Roberts' shot went just wide of the left post after being one on one with the 'keeper.

Minutes later Town 'keeper Ranieri made a vital save low to his right after a James Comley strike.

Palace were on the attack again after Comley sent the ball through to Caprice who was one on one with the 'keeper but his shot went wide of the right post.

Town captain Hyam was booked in the 33rd minute for a foul and five minutes later Jack Ransom was booked for a bad challenge of Hyam.

After a hard fought first-half it was Town who finally got the opener three minutes after the break, Lavery broke down the right side into the 18 yard box, seeing off his defender before passing the ball across the face of goal to Billy Clark who side footed the ball into the back of the net making it 1-0 to Ipswich.
Palace made two changes with Caprice and Roberts being replaced by Wilf Zama and Kielan Kenlock.

The Eagles had a good opportunity to get the game level but Jay Hollany's header went over the bar.

Town then eased the pressure in the 71st minute when Clark played a neat ball over the top to Griffiths who then passed to Lavery whose shot was blocked and fell to Griffiths inside the 18 yard box and was finished with power into the net.

David Cawley was booked in the 73rd minute for a sloppy challenge, Town then made their first subs of the game which saw Josh Meekings and Jamie Griffiths replaced by Callum Bennett and Sam Brandon.

Palace almost found a way back into the game near the end but Ranieri dived out from his goal to prevent the cross from reaching any Palace players.
