Town made a good start to 2010 with a 2-0 victory over Southampton thanks to goals from Jamie Griffiths and Billy Clark.
A strike from Griffiths just before half-time put Blues in front and a second well taken chance from Clark sealed the game late on.
Despite the early pressure the Saints struggled to make any clear cut chances but the Town defence were called upon to prevent any goalscoring opportunities with Tom Eastman making a vital block from a low cross in the 19th minute.
The best chance fell Sam Argent who had a free header in the box but headed straight at Mirko Ranieri.
Town then started getting into the game enjoying more possession and frustration built amongst the away team as Ryan Tafazolli was booked for a tackle from behind on Caolan Lavery in the 43rd minute.
With seconds remaining in the first-half it was Town who broke the deadlock after Luke Hyam's effort was saved low to the left by Jack Dovey only to fall into the path of Griffiths who dispatched the ball into the empty net.
The Saints started the second-half the same way they did the first and would have drawn level if Eastman hadn't cleared off the line from a well worked free-kick in the 50th minute.
Town had a good chance to go 2-0 up soon after but Ronan Murray's shot was deflected wide for a corner.
As the game went on tensions rose and this led to Seb Dunbar and Callum McNish being booked after an altercation.
Town then made the opening subs of the day with Dunbar and Hyam being replaced by Rory McKeown and Sam Brandon in the 66th minute.
Continuing with their pressure on Town Southampton should have been level but Gary Preen missed an open goal from inside the 18 yard box. Town then replaced Murray with Winston Carvalho.
Despite the lack of chances in the second half it was Town who got the second goal of the game after the ball broke through to Clark who took it inside the 18 yard box and placed the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal to kill the game off in the 80th minute.
