TOWN 2 NORWICH 1

Posted on: Mon 03 May 2010

A brace from Caolan Lavery gave Town the derby honours at the training ground today.

The striker cancelled out Norwich's opener from George Francomb's penalty before the break, then won the game for Blues when he scored from the rebound after his spot-kick had been saved.

Town struggled to get into the game early on and it was the visitors who took the lead on 10 minutes after a questionable penalty was awarded following a tackle from Joe Whight. Francomb scored from the spot.

The Canaries went close to extending their lead with a Jason Dobbs volley that was deflected wide.

Blues gradually came back into the game and were level on 17 minutes when Lavery latched onto a through ball before rounding the 'keeper and finishing with ease.

Alex Stephens was then booked for Norwich for persisting fouling and finally kicking the ball away. The visitors made two substitutions at half-time with Dobbs coming off for Sam Kelly and Stephens being replaced by Josh Dawkin.

The Canaries started the second-half how they finished the first, having most of the possession and creating chances and would have gone ahead if not for a good save by Ian McLoughlin. Then Dawkin and Patrick Demola both had efforts saved by the Town 'keeper.

Demola came close to making the breakthrough again but another outstanding save from McLoughlin saw his effort from outside the box tipped away from goal for a corner.

It was Town who edged in front though 15 minutes from time, against the run of play. Lavery latched onto a through ball only to be taken down in the area by Norwich 'keeper Remi Matthews who saved the penalty but saw Lavery tap the rebound into the empty net.

Town replaced Jack Simmons with David October but Norwich continued to carve out openings, Kelly bringing another save out of McLoughlin.

Jamie Griffiths picked up a yellow card as Town were pressed back in the closing stages to but held on for the points.
