MANAGER'S PROGRAMME NOTES V DONCASTER
Town boss Jim Magilton promises no let up over the remaining weeks of the season and hints at a debut for a schoolboy Blue...
Welcome back to Portman Road for this afternoon's game against Doncaster. After last week's defeat at Sheffield United, it's going to need a football miracle for us to make the Play-Offs and that's very disappointing. We wanted to be in the mix with five games to go, but that doesn't look like it's going to be the case now. We gave away two bad goals at Bramall Lane last weekend and never got near the levels we have shown away from home this season and that is what disappointed me more than anything.
There is no way I will let the season drift away, though. Every fan of this football club deserves 100 per cent from every player that pulls on a blue and white shirt and they will get that right up until the last ball has been kicked this year. It's my job to make sure that happens and if I see someone dropping below the standards I expect, I will change the personnel. That said, the players here are more disappointed than anyone that we are not higher up the table than we are.
We have five tough games remaining, starting with Doncaster this afternoon and we know what they are capable of after they beat us at their place earlier this season. They had an outstanding run a while back which took them away from the relegation places, and they did so playing an attractive brand of football. Recently results have gone against them so I'm sure they will want to end that today, while we are looking to finish the season as strongly as possible and put down a marker for next year.
There will be a lot of changes to the playing staff at this Club over the summer. We have 13 players out of contract, which will naturally see a trimming down of the numbers, and there may be other exits. We have identified some targets that we might look at bringing in as well. As I've said many times, it's very much a work in progress.
This job changed last year when Marcus Evans came into the Club. Every aspect of the Club has been looked at with the target of laying the foundations down to move Ipswich Town forward and put us in the best possible position to compete at the top level. That takes time but I'm convinced that the picture will come together.
An important part of those foundations is the development of our young players, lads like Tommy Smith, Jordan Rhodes and Connor Wickham. I gave Tommy his debut at the start of this season and it's been disappointing for the lad, and us, that he has spent the year recovering from a broken ankle. He's on his way back now, though, and I expect him to be pushing hard for a place in the team next season. It's the same with Jordan Rhodes, who has really benefited from his time out on loan this year, while Connor has made great progress and was on the bench for the FA Cup game against Chesterfield in January while he was still 15. We called him back from England U16 duty this week and I would like to give him a taste of first-team football before the season is out.
Enjoy the game
