Town ended the away day hoodoo with goals from Alan Quinn and Alan Lee giving Jim Magilton's side a deserved win at Hillsborough.

Quinn gave Blues a dream start with a 20 yard strike against his former club, Marcus Tudgay levelling the scores soon after with a volley.

Tommy Miller went close for Town before Blues got the decisive second goal on 71 minutes, Lee finding the net for the first time in nine games with a sublime acrobatic finish.

David Norris should have won a penalty seconds later and Danny Haynes was close to adding a third right at the end as an 11 month run without an away win was ended.

Stephen Bywater and Norris were handed their debuts after joining Town in midweek, while fellow newboys Velice Sumulikoski and Nick Colgan started on the bench.

Sumulikoski was only given the green light to play just a few hours before kick-off after international clearance was finally received.

Quinn, who started his career at Sheffield Wednesday before moving on to city rivals United, took just four minutes to silence the boos of the home fans, smashing in a right foot effort that beat Lee Grant at his nearpost.

Jermaine Johnson hit the bar soon after in a frantic opening to the game, his shot taking a deflection off Dan Harding.

The Owls levelled on 12 minutes, Graham Kavanagh's powerful drive blocked by Alex Bruce but Tudgay volleyed the rebound superbly past Bywater.

Town responded, Pablo Counago fired over the bar and on 20 minutes Blues should have been ahead, Quinn's excellent cross met by the head of Norris but the midfielder failed to hit the target.

Norris and Counago teamed up to create an opening on the break but Quinn's final ball into the box evaded Norris and Jon Walters.

Richard Hinds headed away from David Wright's cross, then Johnson broke for Wednesday but delayed his shot and Harding cleared.

Bywater saved comfortably from Tudgay's header following Burton O'Brien's corner, the former England U21 international again showing good positioning to gather Kavanagh's free-kick.

Town went close to going back in front just seconds before the break when Tommy Miller's powerful drive went straight at Grant, a foot either side of the 'keeper and the ball would have hit the net.

Norris had the first shot of the second-half, his effort cannoning back off Mark Beevers' challenge and going harmlessly through to Grant.

The Wednesday 'keeper was called into action again soon after, Walters and Wright linking up well and the Blues' defender's strike saved low down by Grant.

Sheffield made the first change, Wade Small coming on for Ronnie Wallwork just before the hour.

Bywater got no distance with his clearance after Harding's backpass leapt up at him, Johnson picking up the loose ball and flashing the ball across goal and away from danger.

Kavanagh picked up the first booking of the game for a foul on Norris, Town then making a change with Lee replacing Counago. The striker immediately in the action as he burst in on goal before a challenge prevented a shot at goal.

The Republic of Ireland international was not to be denied though, sending an overhead kick into the net from Quinn's header to end his goal famine.

Norris looked to have won a penalty seconds later Grant appeared to bring the midfielder down but referee Colin Webster waved away the appeals, a decision that incensed the Town players.

O'Brien should have done better after Small's cross had fallen to him inside Town's box, Enoch Shownumi making way for Leon Clarke for the last 15 minutes, Sumulikoski coming on for his debut, Owen Garvan going off.

Lee's cutback almost fell into the path of Sumulikoski, Lee's drive was deflected into the sidenetting, Walters then heading over as Blues threatened to wrap up the points.

Wednesday made their final change with Deon Burton replacing Johnson for the last eight minutes.

Tommy Spurr's shot flew over the bar as the Owls pressed forward for an equaliser, Haynes becoming Town's third change, replacing Quinn for the final few minutes.

The teenager striker almost grabbed a third for Town right at the end as he burst in on goal as Blues ended an 18 match run without a win, manager Magilton making sure the players saluted the travelling and celebrating Blue Army on the final whistle.

The win takes Blues back into the top six with a home clash against Watford to look forward to next Saturday.
