A stray parachutist held up kick-off but it was Town who hit the heights with strikes from Liam Trotter, Kevin Lisbie and an own goal from Stephen Jordan giving Blues a comprehensive first League win of the season.
Trotter gave Blues the lead just past the half hour, volleying in from a corner with Lisbie taking his tally to two in two games for Town with a close range finish just before the break.
Jordan completed the scoring in the last two minutes, heading past his own 'keeper as Brian Jensen came running out.
There was drama before a ball had been kicked at Turf Moor with the start delayed for 50 minutes after a stray parachutist from the Red Devils team landed on the roof of the stand, rather than on the pitch with his colleagues, as Burnley looked to kick off their season on home soil in spectacular style.
The Fire Brigade had to be called to help the stranded Red Devil, who was stationed on top of the Cricket Field Stand housing the Town fans in a bizarre opening to Blues' campaign on the road.
The game eventually kicked off with the parachutist still on the stand, the fire officers' access restricted by parked cars.
New signing Ben Thatcher went straight into the Town line-up after arriving at Portman Road in midweek, with Richard Naylor and Alex Bruce retaining their places in the defence after Tuesday's Carling Cup win over Leyton Orient.
Trotter lined up on the left of midfield with Jon Walters on the right with former Claret Alan Lee preferred to Pablo Counago in attack as a partner for Lisbie.
Town forced the first corner of the game through Lisbie, Tommy Miller's set-piece headed away by Stephen Caldwell.
Blues' 'keeper Richard Wright was almost forced into action soon after, covering Joey Gudjonsson's header after good work by Martin Paterson.
Lee and Walters broke clear of the Burnley defence on 10 minutes but the cross was blocked while at the other end, Wright tipped Clarke Carlisle's header over the bar from a corner.
Carlisle was in the thick of the action at the other end, denying Lee inside the Burnley box with an excellent challenge. Chris Eagles then testing Wright with a snapshot on the turn.
Gareth McAuley robbed Eagles as the former Manchester United winger threatened then Eagles provided the danger again with a shot that stung Wright's hands, Town then scrambling the ball clear after it hit the bar.
It was Blues that struck first though on 34 minutes, Trotter volleying the ball in after McAuley had headed on from a corner and just before the break Jim Magilton's side made it two, Lisbie diverting the ball in after good work by Lee.
Walters was denied by Carlisle as Town looked capable of tying the points up before the break, Lee then forced away from danger by Caldwell.
Veliche Shumulikoski picked up the first booking of the game for a tug on Chris McCann before referee Tony Bates brought the first-half to a close with Blues well on top.
Gudjonsson had a free-kick deflected wide by Trotter in the opening exchanges of the second-half, McAuley then scrambling Robbie Blake's corner away as Burnley looked for a way back into the game.
Lee had a chance to extend Blues' lead on 55 minutes but he couldn't get his shot in from Alex Bruce's cross, then the Republic of Ireland international had a one on one with 'keeperJensen, the Dane coming out on top with his outstretched hand denying the Town frontman.
Owen Coyle made a double change on the hour, Ade Akinbiyi and Kevin McDonald on for Blake and Gudjonsson.
Town continued to carve out openings, Lee again denied by Jensen after several slick passes had opened up the home defence. Eagles wasting a free-kick at the other end, Wright then holding firm from a low drive from the same player.
Owen Garvan replaced Trotter on 70 minutes, Wright called into action to hold a shot from Wade Elliott from distance, Paterson seeing another effort go wide.
Danny Haynes joined the action for the closing stages, Lisbie making way - the England U19 international taking up a central striking role and he should have added to the scoring, shooting straight at Jensen when in on goal.
McAuley denied Paterson with a terrific challenge after Burnley's final substitute, former Blues' loanee, Alan Mahon had set him up.
Burnley did get on the scoresheet two minutes from the end with Stephen Jordan heading past Jensen for a bizarre own goal that matched the scenes before kick-off.
Pablo Counago replaced Walters for the final seconds, Caldwell then hitting the woodwork with a free header but Town eased to a fully deserved three points and a first away win of the season, with Wolves the visitors to Portman Road next weekend.
