A moment to savour from Connor Wickham won the game for Town in added on time.

The 16-year-old twisted and turned inside the Iron box before sliding the ball past Joe Murphy to record Town's first back to back wins of the season in the Championship and his first League strike for Blues.

Pablo Counago twice went close to breaking the deadlock, a first-half header hit the top of the bar then the Spaniard was denied by block with the goal open before Wickham won the points for Blues.

Both sides finished with 10 men after Cliff Byrne was dismissed in the second-half for a foul and Damien Delaney followed soon after, also for a foul.

Roy Keane made one change to the side that beat Cardiff in midweek, Counago coming in for David Healy.

Jon Walters fired over inside the first minute of what was a tame opening 45 minutes. The skipper bursting clear on the right but he couldn't keep his shot down.

Gareth McAuley got a good block to deny Paul Hayes, Walters going close at the other end after good work between Daryl Murphy and Counago.

Brian Murphy was fortunate to see his clearance cannon off Damien Delaney and land at McAuley's feet and Town breathed a huge sigh of relief when Murphy denied Matthew Sparrow after he was sent clear by Hayes on the counter midway through the half.

Walters headed wide from Owen Garvan's free-kick before Martyn Woolford picked up a yellow card for a foul on David Wright.

Counago had a penalty appeal turned down after tussling with David Mirfin in the box, Murphy then sending a header into the sidenetting from Garvan's corner.

Counago span away from his marker and tested Joe Murphy in the Scunthorpe goal with a curler from 25 yards, the 'keeper saving comfortably again from Wright's ambitious volley.

Wright then got on the end of an excellent pass from McAuley but his cross beat everyone. Brian Murphy tipped Hayes' effort over the bar then Counago's header hit the top of the bar from close range.

Jack Colback brought a pretty uneventful first-half to a close with a yellow card for a foul.

Wickham replaced Murphy on 49 minutes, the Sunderland loanee clearly an injury concern.

It took a great save from Joe Murphy to keep out Walters' header, McAuley then seeing his header from the resultant corner drift over.
McAuley had a header cleared from another corner, Joe Murphy saving comfortably from Shane O'Connor's follow up shot.

Counago pounced on a misunderstanding in the visitors' box but his goalbound shot struck Byrne. The Iron replacing Hayes with Jonathan  Forte soon after.

Scunthorpe were reduced to 10 men for the closing 20 minutes when Byrne blocked Colback on the halfway line as the Sunderland loanee looked to get on the end of a long pass.

Town made a double change on 74 minutes, Garvan making way for Carlos Edwards and Healy replacing Counago. David Norris headed wide before Blues were reduced to 10 men when Delaney was sent-off for a foul on Forte.

A brilliant Edwards cross evaded Healy at the far post as Town pressed for the winner, the Northern Ireland international snatching at a left footed shot that went over but with the game drifting towards a draw, Wickham showed great composure to lose his marker and blast in from eight yards to give Town the points and become the youngest Blues' scorer since Jason Dozzell in 1984.
