Jim Magilton was satisfied with the display as Town bounced back from the defeat by Wolves to book a place in the Carling Cup Third Round with victory over Colchester.
Goals from Pablo Counago and Kevin Lisbie, against his former team-mates, gave Blues a two goal lead until Steven Gillespie's late response for the visitors.
"It was important to get a positive reaction after Saturday and it gives everyone a confidence boost," Jim told Ipswich World.
"It was a positive response from the start as well. We passed the ball very well in the first-half in particular. Pablo's goal was important. Their 'keeper will probably be disappointed with it. And we could have had a few more before Kevin Lisbie scored a fantastic goal.
"We expected a reaction from Colchester and they didn't disappoint. We switched off for the last 15 minutes when we should have been out of sight and that is something we have to work on.
"Ivan (Campo) had a good 70 minutes or so. The players trust him with the ball and he gives us some experience and quality in there. Jon Walters looked sharper and he will be better for another game and it's nice to be in the next round."
