Roy Keane said Town paid the price for giving away two bad goals as Blues went down at the Ricoh Arena.
Clinton Morrison put Coventry in command after taking advantage of a misunderstanding in the Town defence to put Sky Blues ahead on nine minutes and then thumped in a header midway through the half before Jon Walters pulled a goal back just before the half hour.
"When you look at the goals that we conceded, they were really poor from our point of view," said the Town boss.
"We should have cleared the first one, it was just a straightforward kick down the pitch and then we had opportunities to get the ball away before the cross came in for the second goal. We have to be disappointed with that and it gave us a mountain to climb.
"We got back in the game and had chances and possession but didn't put the ball in the back of the net and that's the hardest part of football. Their 'keeper made some good saves but that's what he is there for.
"We need to be sharper in front of goal and that will have to come but we can't give teams the start we did today."
