FORMER PLAYERS LINE UP FOR SIR BOBBY'S DAY

Posted on: Wed 23 Sep 2009
Lady Elsie Robson will be joined on the pitch by close on 40 former Town players to officially rename the North Stand the Sir Bobby Robson Stand in a ceremony at half-time during Saturday's game against Newcastle.

George Burley, Mick Mills, Frans Thijssen, Kevin Beattie, John Wark and Allan Hunter are just some of Sir Bobby's players from his 13 years in charge at Portman Road who will be in attendance at the match, which kicks-off at 5.30pm.

Scarves and shirts that were left at Sir Bobby's statue in tribute to him after he lost his fight against cancer in July will be placed again around the monument in Portman Road, with the mayors of both Ipswich and Newcastle plus directors of both clubs, led by Blues' Chief Executive Simon Clegg, laying wreaths at the foot of the statue at 4.15pm. Mick Mills will also lay a wreath on behalf of the Town players of Sir Bobby's era.

The ex Town players and coaching staff that worked with Sir Bobby in his time at the Club, including Bobby Ferguson, Charlie Woods and Cyril Lea, will be introduced to the crowd at 5.15pm and line up alongside the dug-out, with Laura Wright - from the All Angels operatic group - who sang at Portman Road on the final day of last season, taking to the pitch to sing Abide With Me.

There will be a minute's applause just before kick-off with the former Blues back on the pitch at half-time for the official naming of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand, which will see Lady Elsie Robson and sons Mark and Paul cut ribbons to release 709 blue and white balloons to mark the number of League and cup games that Sir Bobby was in charge of at Town.

The day's events also see Town fans able to get close up look at the famous Suffolk Punch horses, as depicted on the Club badge, in Alderman Park from 3.30pm to kick-off.
