Town boss Roy Keane has praised Jon Walters after handing the armband to the striker in Alex Bruce's absence.
With Alex sidelined with a groin injury for the trips to Sheffield United and Barnsley, and then on the bench for Saturday's draw with Swansea, Jon has been leading the team out.
"As a striker Jon doesn't play in the best position to be a skipper but he leads by example in the way he trains and plays the game," says the Town boss.
"Some players don't like the responsibility that goes with being a captain. There's a lot more than just leading the team out and I think Gareth [McAuley] has benefited from being able to concentrate on his football and is playing very well for us.
"With Alex injured Jon was the next in line and he seems to be enjoying the responsibility. He has shown leadership skills, not by ranting and raving, but in his work ethic."
Roy admitted that he has not thought about who would skipper when Alex and Jon are both in the side, adding: "I told Alex when he took over that we will see how it goes. It's not a major issue. We have two or three players who can do the job."
