Roy Keane felt Town deserved a draw at Southampton after watching his side slide out of the FA Cup.
Pablo Counago gave Blues a lifeline in the 90th minute but Town couldn't find an equaliser after goals from Wayne Thomas and Michail Antonio had put the home side in charge.
"We didn't do enough to win the game but I didn't think we deserved to lose it either," said the Town boss.
"Credit to their player for the first goal, it was a wonder strike but the second goal was very disappointing.
"Pablo gave us a chance with a goal late on and we had a couple of opportunities after that but it was too little, too late.
"We started playing a bit after we were two goals down but it's easy to do that, I want my players to be brave on the ball when it's goalless."
Roy had no complaints over the decision not to award a goal just after half-time when Pablo Counago appeared to get a touch on a long throw before the ball went in the net.
"I have not spoken to the referee about it and I don't know if anyone touched it but the referee made his decision and I have no problem with that," he said.
