Jon Walters says the Town players have failed to deal with the expectations heaped on the Club following Roy Keane's appointment as manager.
The Blues were installed amongst the favourites for promotion in the summer but In an interview in Saturday's matchday programme ahead of the visit of Bristol City the skipper says: "We can't hide from the fact that it's been a thoroughly disappointing season so far.
"We've not been good enough, simple as that. The table tells the story. We are where we deserve to be.
"We've got good enough players to be doing far better but we have not matched the expectations. When the manager came in, those expectations shot through the roof and maybe some players thought that would be it, we would just turn up and go up because of the manager but it doesn't work like that.
"Maybe mentally, it's been a problem for us this season. When you look at the players here, we have got a good squad yet we have underperformed.
"We have worked hard on the training ground and on the pitch but it's not happened for us. We've got to improve. We need to get away from where we are in the league and make sure we are okay first and then come the end of the year, take a long look at ourselves because we have to move forward."
Saturday's matchday programme includes interviews with Brian Murphy, Jack Colback, Richard Wright and Bristol City's Louis Carey as well as Jon on his international and Premier League ambitions and why football is in danger of going bust.
