Damien Delaney has been ruled out for around three months after suffering a blood clot following a training ground injury.
The Republic of Ireland international sustained a dead leg in training on Thursday but carried on playing and was then working in the gym before the injury quickly deteriorated.
He was immediately taken to hospital and underwent surgery on Thursday afternoon and then again Saturday.
"It's a serious injury and he's a very lucky boy," said Town boss Roy Keane after Blues' 1-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in a friendly in Holland.
"He was lucky our medical care got him to hospital quickly and they operated straight away and then he had more surgery and we believe everything went well.
"Damien will probably be out for about three months. It's a big blow for us and a very serious injury. It could have ended his career, most definitely."
