Another award for perfect pitch
Ipswich Town have been in the honours this week, with Head Groundsman Alan Ferguson picking up the Nationwide Groundsman of the Year award for 2003/04.
Town pipped Preston North End and Cardiff City to the prestigious award, which is the fourth such national honour that Ferguson and his staff have won in recent seasons.
The trophy was presented by Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association, at the City of Manchester Stadium.
"Last season Portman Road was the best I have had it in my time here, certainly over the whole season," said a delighted Ferguson. "I'd have been disappointed if we hadn't won.
"From the England v Croatia game last August to the Elton John concert last month the pitch has been in phenomenal shape.
"We've only missed the elite shortlist three times in eight years, so that demonstrates a remarkable consistency from the team. I'm the lucky guy that goes up to get the prize, but it really is a testament to a true team effort. Our senior groundsman, David Driver, has been with us for about 16 years, for example.
"For Ipswich to be winning these awards on a regular basis, when you think that we are up against bigger clubs with bigger budgets, is a real feather in the Club's cap."
Club Chairman David Sheepshanks said: "I am absolutely delighted for Alan and all of our groundstaff team.
"They fully deserve this accolade as Alan continues to set new standards in the maintenance of the highest quality natural grass pitches to be found anywhere in professional football.
"This year I hope it will provide our players with an added advantage in our quest for promotion."
Along with Alan the groundstaff includes: David Driver, Adam Glancy, Joe Ward, Dan Oliver and Phillip Blackwell.
The other divisional winners for 2003/04 were: Southampton (Premiership), Hartlepool United (Division Two), Macclesfield Town (Division Three).
