Dean McDonald grabbed a hat-trick as Town reserves beat Cambridge 6-1 in a friendly at a windy training ground.

The former Arsenal Academy player, who has signed a contract at Portman Road until the end of the season after impressing on trial, scored twice early on before setting up a third for Town before the break, his cross converted by Liam Manning.

Ashley Nicholls, who was back on familiar territory as an ex Town apprentice, claimed Cambridge's goal as the teams went in at the break with Blues 3-1 ahead.

McDonald added a fourth after good work by Jaime Peters, Cambridge conceded an own goal for a fifth with Canadian international Peters completing the scoring after being set up by Adem Atay.

Gerard Nash came through the 90 minutes without any problems as he steps up his recovery after having knee surgery and Scott Barron also took another step closer to full fitness following a groin operation.
