TOWN 2 LUTON 3

Posted on: Wed 31 Mar 2010

Town went down to last minute goal at Portman Road after Ronan Murray and Lee Martin twice brought Blues back into the game.

Luton went ahead midway through the first-half when Ryan Charles volleyed the opener. Town drew level with a headed effort from Murray but found themselves behind for a second time when Rossi Jarvis scored with a great 20 yard effort.

Blues drew level for a second time when Lee Martin converted a penalty which looked to have sealed a point but Luton scored for the third time in the dying seconds of the game through a Mark Nwokeji header.

The opening stages of the game started evenly but Town almost scored the opener in the sixth minute when Reggie Lambe broke down the left wing and delivered a low driven cross across the face of goal but Martin couldn't get a touch on the ball to send it towards goal.

Minutes later Town were on the offensive again with Martin laying the ball back to Jack Ainsley in the 18 yard box but his shot was saved low to the left by Luton 'keeper Shane Gore.

Troy Brown was replaced by Rory McKeown in the 15th minute after a collision of heads going for a header, the defender leaving the field with a facial injury.

Luton began getting into the game and could have been ahead if not for a good save from Richard Wright low to the left from an Asa Hall header.

With both teams searching for the opener Ryan Charles was booked in the27th minute after a late challenge on Luke Hyam.
Town continued putting pressure on Luton and Lambe came close to breaking the deadlock but his shot from inside the 18 yard box was stopped by Gore.

Luton were getting more into the game as time went on and came close to scoring when Matthew Barnes Homer flicked the ball back to Craig Nelthorpe on the left wing who swung in a great cross but no Hatter could get anything on it.

Less than a minute later Luton were back on the left wing this time with Nwokeji delivering a ball deep into the 18 yard box which was volleyed by Charles into the ground and over Wright into the top left corner.

Town came out fighting straight from the kick-off and could have scored when Lambe shot from inside the left of the 18 yard box but his effort went wide.

With less than 10 minutes of the half to go Town got an equaliser when Billy Clark crossed the ball from the left into Murray who latched onto it, heading it pass the 'keeper from the back post.

Three minutes later and Town found themselves a 1-2 down after Wright came out and claimed a free kick only for the ball to escape from his hands and be played back to Luton captain Jarvis who rifled the ball into the top left corner from 20 yards.

Both teams made changes at half-time with Devann Yao replacing Sam Brandon and Adam Watkins coming on for Alan Neilson, after he appeared to pick up an injury.

The second-half started how the first had finished and Town continued to make chances and almost drew level when Murray intercepted a loose pass from Godfrey Poku and took the ball into the left side of the 18 yard box before cutting inside and hitting a curling shot with his right foot that rattled the far post.

Luton made a substitution with Ashley Deeney replacing goal scorer Charles.

Nwokeji could have put Luton 3-1 up when he got the ball in the 18 yard box but he opted for power instead of placement hitting his shot wide.

Town got the leveller they were after when Murray laid the ball across from the left to Martin inside the 18 yard box who's shot was well saved low to the left by Gore but the 'keeper then tripped Martin when both players went for the ball resulting in a penalty for

Town which the midfielder dispatched in the bottom left corner to make it 2-2 in the 67th minute. Luton made their final substitution with Alex Lacey replacing Poku in the 77th minute.

Town were almost ahead after Yao broke on the counter attack and after some neat work outside the box, his effort went over the bar.

Eight minutes from time Luton could have gone ahead for the third time when Barnes-Homer crossed to the back post where the ball met the head of Ty Atenio who headed over.

Luton did that the lead in the 90th minute though when sub Lacey whipped in a great ball which was met with a diving header from Nwokeji, who sent the ball flying into the top right corner leaving Wright no chance.
