TOWN 3 STEVENAGE 1

Posted on: Wed 18 Aug 2010

The reserves got off to a winning start in the totesport.com combination league with a 3-1 win over Stevenage thanks to goals from Caolan Lavery, David Cawley and Reggie Lambe.

Town started brightly and might have taken the lead in the opening minutes but no one managed to latch onto Lambe's low cross from the right.

Minutes later Chris Kiwomya's side had their first shot at goal with a long range effort from Cawley hit straight at Stevenage 'keeper Ashley Bayes.

Stevenage grew into the game and it took a great block from Josh Carson to prevent Peter Vincenti's shot from finding the back of the net.

The best opportunity of the first-half fell to the visitors' Njazi Kuqi, brother of former Town striker Shefki, but his shot was again blocked by Carson eight yards out.

Arran Lee-Barrett was called into action twice in quick succession for Town, making two good saves to his left to keep the score level going into the break.

Blues took the lead early in second-half when Lavery got on the end of a long ball and lobbed the 'keeper.

A minute later Town were 2-0 up after some good work from Jack Ainsley saw the ball played to Cawley who finished smartly at the back post.

Lavery had a good chance to increase Town's lead when he was one on one with Bayes but the 'keeper blocked the shot but Blues didn't have to wait long for a third goal, Lavery fed Billy Clark who crossed first time for Lambe to volley in.

Stevenage grabbed a consolation nine minutes from time when Jon Ashton got on the end of a corner to volley home but Blues should have had a fourth deep into injury time when Clark was one on one with the 'keeper but dragged his shot wide.
