Late strike from Joao gives Wednesday the win

Lucas Joao inflicted more pain on Town with a 90th minute winner at Portman Road.

The Wednesday frontman followed up his brace in the win over Blues earlier in the season with a close range finish after Adam Reach had set him up.

Trevoh Chalobah went close to putting Town ahead late on, Keiren Westwood making a save on the line after the Chelsea loanee had headed on from a corner.

Fernando Forestieri had gilt-edged chances to put Sheffield ahead in the first hour but Town looked on for a point until Joao arrived from the bench to have the final say.

James Bree came in for his debut in one of four Town changes to the side that lost at Villa last week, with Luke Chambers and James Collins forced out through injury.

Toto Nsiala partnered Matt Pennington in the middle, with Collin Quaner and Teddy Bishop also featuring as Steve Bruce took charge of Wednesday for the first time.

Forestieri fired over from 25 yards in the game’s first effort, at the other end Tom Lees headed clear from Freddie Sears’ cross, Michael Hector then in the right place to clear as Quaner threatened at the far post.

Hector turned provider on the quarter hour, a sublime pass setting up Steven Fletcher, the Scotland international denied by Bart Bialkowski, then Nsiala throwing himself in the way of George Boyd’s follow up.

Bishop opened up the Wednesday defence with a twist and turn, then found Quaner but Hector cleared the danger, Sears firing wide of the far post after a Town break.

Reach ripped a left footer well wide, the midfielder then wasted the clearest chance of the opening 35 minutes, diverting Morgan Fox’s volley over the bar from six yards.

Forestieri headed another good chance over seconds later, Bialkowski beating out a strike from the Italian, then the Sheffield frontman was way off target with a third effort in as many minutes.

Alan Judge whipped in a dangerous free-kick that Wednesday managed to scramble clear to bring a first-half to a close that had seen the visitors create the better of the openings.

The Owls started the second-half confidently, Forestieri linking up well with Bannan and Reach but his radar was off with a chip, then Town were relieved to see a cross flash across the six yard box to safety.

Will Keane replaced Quaner in Town’s first change, Forestieri blazing over with another gilt-edged chance from close range before Wednesday made their first change with Josh Onomah on for Boyd.

Nsiala did well to steer Forestieri away from danger, the Owls striker then finding space inside the Town box but poking the ball wide, Joao replacing Fletcher as Bruce shuffled his pack.

Chalobah replaced Bishop for the closing stages, Flynn Downes and Judge both going close from the edge of the box.

Judge opened up the Owls’ defence, Hector clearing at full stretch then Chalobah got up well from a corner to force a save from Westwood.

The breakthrough came on 90 minutes, Reach escaped down the right and from his pull-back, Joao did the rest to give Wednesday the points.
