Blues beaten across the Essex border
Town went down to defeat at Braintree as the pre-season campaign got underway.
A goal in each half from former Crawley striker Aryan Tajbakhsh, the second an excellent free-kick, gave The Iron the win.
Martyn Waghorn was just over with an audacious effort from 40 yards before Braintree took the lead on 12 minutes. Flynn Downes appeared to be fouled but the referee waved away appeals and Tajbakhsh finished comfortably from 15 yards.
The National League side almost added a second soon after when Josh Hill forced Dean Gerken to tip his header over the bar.
Gerken was again in action to beat out a cross from Tajbakhsh, then Dan Thompson should have made it two, failing to convert Christie Pattison's cross from six yards.
Waghorn then sent another long range effort just over, before pulling a right foot strike wide of the post after Jordan Roberts set him up on the edge of the box just before the break.
Tristan Nydam smashed a left footer just wide as the second-half got underway,
Freddie Sears seeing his toe-poked effort deflected wide before Nathan McDonald produced an excellent save to deny Roberts after a flowing Town move.
Braintree doubled their lead just past the hour when Tajbakhsh bent a superb free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.
Town made a flood of changes soon after, with Andre Dozzell included as the team took on a teenage look and the midfielder was unlucky not to find Pat Webber with a ball deep in Braintree territory.
It took an excellent save from Harry Wright though to prevent the Essex side making it three in the final minute.
