Edwards strikes but Blues share derby honours

Town’s wait for a derby win goes on after Gwion Edwards’ opener was cancelled out by Moritz Leitner 20 minutes from time.

Jon Walters hit the post for Blues in the first-half, with Teemu Pukki going close for the visitors before Edwards edged Town in front on the hour.

Leitner levelled things up with a left foot finish but Grant Ward was inches away from a dramatic winner in added on time.

Town made six changes to the side that went down at Sheffield Wednesday last week, with Walters starting on his return to the Club and Jordan Graham also included along with Everton loanee Matthew Pennington. Dean Gerken replaced Bart Bialkowski in goal.

Graham sent a free-kick over the bar inside the first two minutes, then the Canaries were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Town box after Cole Skuse was penalised for a foul having clearly played the ball, Alex Tettey heading over from a great position following Leitner’s delivery.

Walters forced the ball into the danger area but Kayden Jackson couldn’t get a shot in, Grant Hanley clearing, Jon Nolan having a shot blocked, Skuse then heading over from Edwards’ driven corner.

Timm Klose headed wide from another free-kick for the visitors, Gerken clearing from Pennington’s backpass, then Tettey smashed a 25 yarder wide.

Luke Chambers picked up the first yellow card after being judged to have pulled down former Blue, Jordan Rhodes, as the game continued at pace.

Edwards couldn’t find a way past Jamal Lewis after a surging run, but Norwich had more success at the other end, Pukki hitting the outside of the post after a counter.

Walters brought back the memories with a terrific strike from the edge of the box that hit the woodwork, then Graham went down in the box with virtually all of Portman Road screaming for a penalty, referee Robert Jones showing a yellow card to the Wolves loanee instead.

Skuse’s derby sadly ended just before the break, the midfielder receiving lengthy treatment from paramedics and Town’s medical staff before leaving the field on a stretcher, Trevoh Chalobah the replacement.

Graham saw a free-kick deflected wide, Chambers unable to get his header on target from the corner as Town looked for an opener.

Ben Godfrey replaced Klose at the break, the substitute immediately picking up a yellow card.

Chalobah twice had shots at goal from inside the Norwich box as Blues started on the front foot, Jackson’s header from Walters’ cross held by Tim Krul.

Jonas Knudsen’s cross was cleared as Town turned up the heat on the Norwich goal, Jackson then blocked out as Walters headed on before Portman Road exploded just before the hour when Edwards’s shot found the net via a deflection.

Edwards almost doubled the lead minutes later, bursting deep into Canaries territory but pulling his shot just wide. The flying winger then trying his luck from a free-kick but was off target.

Louis Thompson replaced Emiliano Buendia in Norwich’s second change, Gerken beating out Tettey’s deflected effort, then Knudsen was in the right place to clear the danger from another set-piece.

Grant Hanley diverted the ball over the bar, Krul saving comfortably from Knudsen’s header before Norwich levelled on 71 minutes, Leitner’s left footer finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Walters couldn’t get his shot in after Pennington’s header into the box found him in space but with his back to goal, Rhodes making way for Dennis Srbeny in Norwich’s final change.

Ward replaced Graham for the final 10 minutes, the substitute’s excellent cross gathered by Krul as Jackson waited to pounce. Ellis Harrison getting his first taste of derby action, Jackson making way.

Ward almost won it for Town in added on time, his strike going just wide as the honours were shared, with Blues’ players receiving a warm ovation as they left the field.
