Sears strikes but Town  go down to last minute goal

Town went down to a last minute goal from Joe Nuttall at a wind-swept Bloomfield Road.

Freddie Sears’ goal early in the second-half looked to have given Blues a point after the Seasiders had led at the break through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Gary Madine hit the bar for Blackpool and Sears was denied on 90 minutes by Chris Maxwell but the home side went up the other end and Nuttall headed in at the near post to give his side a dramatic win.

Sears and Teddy Bishop came in for their first league starts of the season in two of four changes made to the side that lost to Oxford last weekend. Teenagers Tyreece Simpson and Armando Dobra were included among the substitutes.

Blackpool enjoyed a flurry of early corners but Tomas Holy was equal to the task, Bishop winning a first flag kick for Blues, Luke Garbutt’s delivery beating everyone at the far post.

Former Town loanee Liam Feeney carved out a cross from the right that Luke Chambers cleared, the skipper then in the right place to stop the threat from Connor Ronan on the other flank while at the other end Sears fizzed in a cross that just evaded Emyr Huws.

Holy launched a kick downfield that took off in  the wind and flew past Maxwell’s left hand post, Sears over with a right foot effort from 20 yards, then Chambers did well again to hold up Madine as Blackpool threatened on the break.

Will Keane dragged a shot wide of the far post after Flynn Downes had broken through the middle of the park but on the half hour the Seasiders were ahead, Town failed to clear and Dewsbury-Hall’s left footer found the bottom corner.

Blues were close to an equaliser on 36 minutes, Downes forced Maxwell into a save low to his left but as Sears looked to pounce, the danger was smothered away with Sears claiming a penalty as he went down.

Downes was just wide from 18 yards as Blues pressed for a leveller and Huws showed good technique to test Maxwell with a crisp left footer from the edge of the box.

Bishop had a shot blocked inside the area then Keane’s clever header set up Sears whose shot was held by Maxwell as Town finished the half on top but without getting any reward.

Town got the goal that had been coming on 54 minutes, Keane did the hard work down the right and sent in a perfect cross for Sears to finish with a volley.

Downes picked up a 10th yellow card of the season and a two match suspension, the midfielder replaced soon after by Alan Judge, Bishop making way for Dobra on the hour.

Madine’s cross drifted away from danger, Nuttall on for Ronan in Blackpool’s first change, Garbutt then defending well to guide a cross back to Holy as Madine looked to get in.

Judge tested Maxwell as the game opened right up, Keane seeing a shot forced behind for a corner, Madine hitting the bar following a corner, then seconds later Judge was inches wide.

Holy spotted the danger superbly to take the ball off Callum MacDonald’s feet, Keane just short of getting on the end of Luke Woolfenden’s cross, Simpson then on for his league debut in place of Keane.

On 90 minutes Sears burst clear and had a chance to put Town in front  but Maxwell was off his line to save and it proved crucial as seconds later Nuttall had the final word.
