Holy penalty save gives Blues a point after Chambers 'goal' controversy

A brilliant penalty save from Tomas Holy late on gave Town a share of the spoils against Wycombe, with Blues denied what looked a perfectly good opening goal in the first-half.

The ‘keeper stuck out his left hand to deny Joe Jacobson five minutes from time after Luke Chambers pulled back Dominic Gape.

It was Chambers who looked to have given Town a first-half lead, the skipper heading goalwards with the ball going in off a Wycombe player but referee Alan Young ruled it out for offside after the players were ready to restart.

Blues had the better chances but Holy’s intervention proved the key point in the game after the first-half controversy.

Holy returned in goal, while Flynn Downes missed out with sickness as Town took on Wycombe for the first time in competitive football. The visitors skippered by former Blue, Matt Bloomfield.

Curtis Thompson fizzed a shot wide in the first effort at goal, Luke Woolfenden covering well to clear the danger from David Wheeler’s cross, while at the other end Kayden Jackson’s burst’s on goal was curtailed by the offside flag.

A foul on Jackson down the left gave Luke Garbutt a chance to swing in a free-kick, the ball falling to James Wilson at the far post but his effort was cleared, then Jon Nolan had another strike that was blocked with Town appealing for handball.

Jackson crossed from the right, James Norwood threw himself at the ball but just failed to connect as Blues began to threaten, Norwood wide from distance with a right foot volley, then another Garbutt delivery was hacked clear by Anthony Stewart.

It needed the feet of Holy to deny Adebayo Akinfenwa just before the half hour mark when the Wycombe striker muscled his way into the danger area, Garbutt hitting the wall with a free-kick from 25 yards, Emyr Huws volleying well wide from the resultant corner.

Jacobson pulled his free-kick wide from the angle of the box, Chambers glancing a header wide of the far post from a corner, the skipper then looking to have to put Town in front when he headed in from yet another Garbutt delivery but with Blues back in their half for kick-off, referee Alan Young ruled the ‘goal’ out for offside after consultation with his assistant.

Norwood got the second-half underway with an ambitious shot from distance that failed to trouble Ryan Allsop in the Wycombe goal,  Norwood much closer with a header from Garbutt’s cross, then at the other end Bloomfield skied his shot from the edge of the box.

Scott Kashket replaced Paul Smyth in the game’s first change, Akinfenwa hooking the ball over the bar, then the striker unable to direct his header goalwards at the far post.

Bloomfield received a warm ovation from the Blue Army as he made way for Nick Freeman but it was Town who continued to look the more likely to break the deadlock, Jon Nolan seeing a shot deflected over, then firing over from 20 yards.

Town made a double change for the closing stages with Gwion Edwards and Danny Rowe on for Wilson and Huws.

Holy took centre stage on 85 minutes, Chambers judged to have brought down Gape in the box with the incident looking outside the area but the ‘keeper did brilliantly to keep out Jacobson’s spot-kick and earn Blues a point.
