Roberts at the double gives Town the win
Jordan Roberts’ first goals for Town gave Blues a winning start to the Leasing.com Trophy campaign.
Tottenham led at the break through an early strike from Armando Shashoua but Town were level inside a minute of the second-half when Roberts converted after great work by Armando Dobra.
It was Dobra again who provided the decisive second goal with more trickery before setting up Roberts who did the rest.
Dobra was denied what would have been a deserved goal himself late on as Blues began the group stage with three points.
Paul Lambert made several changes from the team that beat Shrewsbury at the weekend, with Jon Nolan making his first start since recovering from a calf injury.
Skipper for Town on the night, Nolan almost found Roberts with an incisive pass inside the first few minutes, Emyr Huws then hooking the ball back into the danger area from the right as Blues started on the front foot.
It was Spurs who made the early breakthrough though, Shashoua sliding the ball past Will Norris on eight minutes after some intricate build up play.
Roberts responded with a header just over from Janoi Donacien’s cross, Roberts turning provider soon after with a cross from the right after Idris El Mizouni had sent him free.
Norris saved from Tracey, while at the other end Gwion Edwards saw a goalbound effort blocked, then Dobra burst into the box but Tottenham got bodies in the way of the shot.
James Wilson headed wide from El Mizouni’s free-kick in a gilt edged chance for Town to level the scores midway through the half, Dobra then warming the hands of ‘keeper Alfie Whiteman with a thunderous drive after a swift break.
Norris saved low down from Shashoua before Rodel Richards had an excellent chance to extend Spurs’ lead just before the break but after rounding Norris, he couldn’t find the net from the angle.
Town took just a minute to get back on level terms as the second-half got underway, Dobra the provider with trickery down the right and Roberts converted from close range.
Dobra was causing Tottenham problems and he raced in on goal soon after but his radar was off, Roberts seeing a shot deflected just wide after another rapid Town break, then El Mizouni’s flashing header from Roberts’ cross went straight at Whiteman.
Norris held on from Jubril Okedina, El Mizouni just wide after Dobra and Nolan linked up before Town went in front on 65 minutes, Dobra again playing a massive part in the goal and Roberts converting from eight yards.
Roberts made way for Tyreece Simpson, the striker on for his debut, Whiteman forced to push Nolan’s driven cross behind after clever work by El Mizouni, then Huws fizzed a free-kick just over.
Whiteman denied Simpson with a flying save as Town pressed for a third but at the other end Shilow Tracey was inches away from an equaliser, his strike beating everyone and the far post.
Enock Asante wasted a golden chance to take the game to penalties, firing past the post from close range, while the impressive Dobra had the final word with a blistering strike that was beaten out by Whiteman.
