Town's U23s victorious at

Danny Rowe and Kai Brown were on target as Town's U23s defeated Birmingham 2-0 at Portman Road this evening.

The opener was a wonderful volley from Rowe, before the winger turned provider for Brown in the closing stages as Town broke away while the visitors were pushing for an equaliser.

Andre Dozzell, Jordan Roberts and Rowe all played 90 minutes as they looked to impress the watching Paul Hurst.

Town threatened early as Roberts headed a Dozzell corner narrowly over the crossbar, although it was an otherwise uneventful first 20 minutes to the game.

The first goal of the game came midway through the first-half as Rowe put the finishing touches to a lovely passing move as he lashed Shane McLoughlin's cross into the top corner with a cracking volley.

Gerard Nash's side came close to doubling the lead less than five minutes later, but Jack Lankester was unlucky as his initial effort was well blocked by the visiting defence, before the follow up was fantastically tipped away by Michael Luyambula.

Town had a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 a minute before half-time as Jordan Roberts was sent clear of the opposing defence, but his dinked effort struck the underside of the crossbar and was cleared to safety.

Although the hosts were largely in control in the opening stages of the second-half, Harry Wright was called into action on the hour mark as he first parried Odin Bailey's 20 yard shot before getting up quickly to prevent Kyle McFarlane from scoring the rebound.

Birmingham threatened again soon after, and very nearly grabbed an equaliser, but Josh Martin's near post header hit the crossbar & bounced clear.

Town were holding on going into the final stages, with Wright again called into action, but as Birmingham pushed higher for a leveller, Town hit them on the counter-attack and put the game beyond doubt.

Kai Brown arrived late at the back-post to turn home Rowe's cross to ensure the three points stayed at Portman Road.

Town: Wright, Cotter, Kenlock, Marshall, Ndaba, Downes (McGavin, 39), Dozzell, Rowe, McLoughlin, Lankester (K. Brown, 78), Roberts. Not used: Ware, Z. Brown, Clements.
