BLUES PROGRESS IN SUFFOLK PREMIER CUP

13 November 2012

Hyam bags a brace as Town see off non-league outfit Walsham Le Willows

Town progressed to the next round of the Suffolk Premier Cup, after a comfortable 5-1 win over Walsham Le Willows.

A brace from Luke Hyam set the tone for Blues, with Jason Scotland, Michael Chopra and Ronan Murray also getting themselves on the scoresheet.

Mick McCarthy and assistant Terry Connor were in attendance and would have been pleased with the workout from the Town XI, which included a number of first-team players.

The non-league outfit gave a good account of themselves and were quick out of the blocks and it wasn’t until the half hour mark before Blues tested the Walsham ‘keeper, with Chopra seeing his effort pushed away from danger.

But Town did take the lead shortly after, with Chopra pulling the ball back to Hyam who coolly slotted into the bottom left corner.

Ten minutes into the second-half and Town doubled their lead. Scotland raced clear of the Walsham defence and went through one-on-one before applying a neat finish.

Chopra was looking a threat and he was denied a goal by a fine save from Duncan McAnally.

However Blues were to extend their soon after, as Hyam bagged his second and Town’s third with a screamer that went flying into the top left corner of the goal.

Chopra finally got his name on the score-sheet ten minutes from time with a fine finish from just inside the box as Town began to dominate the game

There was still time for Town to add a fifth goal, with substitute Ronan Murray rounding McAnally before rolling the ball into the empty net with just five minutes left on the clock.

To their credit, Walsham did grab a consolation strike just before the final whistle as Jack Brame pounced on a goalmouth scramble to fire home before the referee soon called time on the entertaining game.

One disappointment for Town saw 'keeper Scott Loach have to be withdraw late on, after picking up a knee injury.

Town starting XI: Loach, Hewitt, Ainsley, Mohsni, Youga, Hyam, Drury, Emmanuel-Thomas, Ellington, Scotland, Chopra. Subs: Crowe, Whight, Lawrence, Torsteinsson, Murray.

Attendance: 745
