Boss delighted with win as Town secure Championship status

Mick McCarthy was delighted to see mission accomplished as Blues secured Championship status with a 3-1 win over Birmingham.

Goals from Carlos Edwards, Luke Chambers and Daryl Murphy eased Town to the three points and took the Club to 11th in the table on 60 points.

“Yes, it’s mission accomplished and pretty emphatically in the end,” the Town boss told the Club website.

“I’m delighted for everyone. This is a great club, with some great people working here so it feels good that we have secured our Championship status.

“It was a good performance as well. We should have had a penalty before Carlos sticks one in from 30 yards. We wanted goals from him and he has blossomed in that respect.

“The players have responded to me and Terry. We have got the best out of them and I think that is one of our qualities and if you can do that, it’s one of the most powerful weapons – getting the best out of people.”

Mick led the players around the pitch after the game to thank the supporters for their backing this season but admitted it was done with mixed feelings.

“The fans have been brilliant and going out there was about us thanking them, showing our appreciation to them,” added the boss.

“I’d rather be walking around the pitch though celebrating getting in the Play-Offs or getting out of the Championship at the top end, rather than celebrating staying up.”
