Mick in relaxed mood ahead of Championship opener but admits the butterflies will kick in come 3pm
Mick McCarthy says he has been more relaxed this pre-season than in previous years but now can’t wait for that competitive edge to kick in.
Blues open the Championship campaign against Reading on Saturday, with a travelling support of close on 2,700 set to make the trip to the Madejski Stadium.
“I’m looking forward to the season. I always do,” Mick told the Club website.
“I’ve enjoyed pre-season – more so than I have done in the past. Maybe that’s the advantage of age. There has got to be some advantage!
“Maybe I’m a bit wiser now. I’ve not been so intense and I’ve been pleased with some of the football we have played.
“The real stuff starts now though, the competitive edge comes in and I relish that. The butterflies will be going again at 3pm on Saturday. I’d be worried if they weren’t. Those nerves mean the commitment is still there and that I’m ready for it.
“The number of fans we are taking means there is a bit of optimism there, a bit more expectation but that’s fine.
"We go into season aiming for a place in the top six because that’s where we want to be. We’ll find out whether that’s feasible or not.”
