Town defender all smiles as his two goals lead the way as Blues put on impressive display to brush aside Middlesbrough at Portman Road

Tommy Smith was full of smiles after helping Town beat Middlesbrough 4-0 at Portman Road, summing up his afternoon as ‘pretty perfect’.

The New Zealand international scored a goal in each half- either side of strikes from David McGoldrick and Aaron Mclean- as well as helping Blues keep a clean sheet on the way to recording a first win of 2013.

“It’s always a nice feeling when you get yourself on the scoresheet but it’s even better when the team gets the three points as well,” the defender told the Club website.

“I thought we performed superbly throughout and it was a solid all-round performance today.

“As a defender I pride myself on keeping clean sheets, so to have done that and scored a couple of goals to help us win the game sums up a pretty perfect day for me.

“We’ve been working on our set-pieces a lot in training and me and Chambo (Luke Chambers) like to vary who runs where, so it’s difficult for defenders to pick us up.

“It’s worked well for us today and the ball has found me in the right areas and I’ve managed to score two goals, which I’m obviously delighted with.

The main thing was getting the three points though and I think our performance certainly deserved the win.”
