Blues come from behind to win at Portman Road thanks to strikes from Emmanuel-Thomas and Clarke
Town’s U21 Development side came from behind to beat Millwall 2-1 at Portman Road.
Goals from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Matthew Clarke cancelled out Charlie Penny’s early opener for the Lions.
Town made the worst possible start to the game as the visitors broke the deadlock with their first attack of the game.
John Marquis played through Charlie Penny and the winger showed good composure to slide the ball past Scott Loach and into the bottom corner from a tight angle after four minutes.
Blues did come back into the game and should have drawn level after 18 minutes. A neat move saw Kyle Hammond find Emmanuel-Thomas, whose shot from the edge of the box cannoned back off the post and into the path of Michael Chopra, but the striker was denied by a great recovery save by Tom Wellham.
However Chopra was to make amends for that miss three minutes later, as he turned provider for strike partner Emmanuel-Thomas who slid in ahead of his marker to turn the ball home at the near-post.
Town were close to taking the lead not long after the hour mark through Gunnar Thorsteinsson, but the Icelandic defender was left frustrated as his header came crashing back off the crossbar.
But Blues did take the lead shortly after, with Clarke capping off a fine flowing move with a neat finish.
Chopra and Emmanuel-Thomas linked up well and the latter picked out Clarke in the box, who applied the finishing touch from close range.
Meanwhile at the other end Loach had to be alert to keep out Penny’s header, with the Town stopper making a routine save at his near-post to gather the ball.
Byron Lawrence, who was wearing the captain’s armband, almost sealed the win with a low drive late on but his effort flew just wide before the referee called time on the game with Mark Kennedy’s side taking all three points.
