Mick delighted with away win and clean sheet

Mick McCarthy hailed his side’s defensive qualities after Tommy Smith’s early goal gave Blues the three points at Charlton.

The New Zealand international headed in after five minutes in a blistering start for Town and that proved enough to give Blues a second successive away win.

“We have played better than that away and lost,” said the Town boss.

“We have not defended much better than that and lost though. It was a good defensive display.

“Cressy was outstanding for us. Charlton had a couple of headers but overall we defended very well. When you score a goal and keep a clean sheet you have to be happy with that.

“I wanted us to start really fast and we did that. We could have scored a couple of goals before we did. Their ‘keeper made some great saves.

“Charlton played well in the second-half but we handled it well. We got the three points, won away and kept a clean sheet so it’s been a good day.”
