TOMMY RELISHING MEXICO MISSION

13 November 2013

Blue to lead All Whites in World Cup Play-Off

Tommy Smith is looking forward to playing in the amazing atmosphere of the Azteca Stadium in front of more than 100,000 as New Zealand take on Mexico tonight.

The 23-year-old Town defender will skipper the All Whites in the first-leg of their World Cup Play-Off with a place in next summer’s finals at stake.

Mexico, who have not included Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez and former Town loanee Giovani Dos Santos in their squad, are favourites to progress to Brazil but Tommy is relishing the challenge and the chance to reach a second successive World Cup, having played in the 2010 tournament.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Tommy, who made his New Zealand debut against Mexico in 2010, told the Club website.

“Mexico just got through their qualification but they’re obviously a top side to test ourselves against. We know we’re up against it and it will be a real challenge for us but we’re ready for it.

“It’s going to an amazing experience playing against them in front of something crazy like 105,000 people but we will be giving it everything over the two legs to get to the World Cup.”
