BOLTON 1 TOWN 1

26 October 2013

McGoldrick strike gives Town a share of the points

David McGoldrick’s sixth goal of the season gave Town a third successive away point.

The striker volleyed in superbly from the edge of the box midway through the second-half to cancel out Medo’s opener from a 20 yard free-kick.

Blues had the better chances, with Andy Lonergan saving from Ryan Tunnicliffe’s point blank effort in the first-half.

Dean Gerken and Daryl Murphy both recovered from injury to take their places in an unchanged Town line-up at the Reebok Stadium, with Bolton naming former Blues’ ‘keeper Arran Lee-Barrett amongst their substitutes.

Jermaine Beckford sent an overhead kick just over at the start of an entertaining first-half which saw chances at both ends, Jay Spearing releasing David Ngog on the left but Tommy Smith was in the right place to clear.

Andy Lonergan plucked Daryl Murphy’s cross out of the air after McGoldrick had set him up, then seconds later Cole Skuse sent a 30 yard chip onto the roof of the net after Lonergan’s poor clearance.

Town had the clearer chances in the opening 45 minutes, Paul Anderson failing to get any power in his volley when in on goal then Tunnicliffe should have put Blues ahead when he got on the end of Murphy’s cross eight yards out but Lonergan saved brilliantly.

Chung-Yong Lee sent Ngog through in the Town box and from his cross, Beckford spun and shot just wide, while at the other end Tim Ream cleared as McGoldrick challenged, then the American was in the right place again to prevent the danger from Anderson’s cross after McGoldrick had initially drilled a shot wide.

Neil Danns was crowded out inside the Town box as he looked to break the deadlock before half-time, with Christophe Berra eventually hacking clear following a game of pin-ball.

Matt Mills headed wide from Lee’s corner as the second-half got underway, Ngog then volleying past Gerken’s far post.

McGoldrick followed suit, dragging his shot past the upright as Town responded, Lee forcing a save from Gerken with a right foot effort from the edge of the box.

Murphy was inches away from the opener on the hour, the striker wriggling free inside the Bolton box and his effort was goalbound until taking a deflection.

Berra picked up the first yellow card of the game after he brought down Beckford just outside the box and Medo made Town pay, sending his free-kick into the net via Gerken’s outstretched hand on 65 minutes.

Good work by Smith did enough to prevent Beckford getting a shot in after Bolton broke before Blues grabbed the equaliser on 73 minutes,  McGoldrick volleying in from the edge of the box after his first shot had rebounded back to him.

Jay Tabb and Frank Nouble replaced Luke Hyam and Murphy for the last 15 minutes, Chris Eagles on for Ngog in Bolton’s first change.

Nouble had an immediate impact with surging run down the right and his cross found McGoldrick but the ball escaped from his control and Lonergan smothered the danger.

Lonergan was forced into action again to save from McGoldrick, Beckford couldn’t find the target with his header from eight yards out, with Danns firing over with the last chance as a winner proved elusive.
