MICK EXPECTS KEEN 'KEEPER CONTEST

17 July 2014

Gerks first choice but Bart will be pushing for his place says boss

Mick McCarthy expects Dean Gerken to have a battle on his hands to remain first choice at Portman Road after Bartosz Bialkowski’s arrival at Portman Road.

The Polish ‘keeper impressed with a couple of excellent saves after making his first appearance in Town colours in last night’s goalless draw in a friendly with West Ham.

“Bart did really well. He looks a good ‘keeper,” the Town boss told the Club website.

“We have been watching him for a while. He has been number one at Notts County and will give us good competition in the goalkeeping area.

“Gerks has been fantastic for us. He will be starting at number one but he knows that if he doesn’t keep up his performances and Bart is doing better, Bart will play.

“It’s just like Loachy [Scott Loach] last year. He started off as number one but Gerks dislodged him and never looked back.

“He deserves to start the season as number one but looking at Bart, he is going to be pushing him all the way.”
