SHELBOURNE 0 IPSWICH TOWN 4

12 July 2014

Blues in charge at Tolka Park thanks to Anderson and McQueen strikes

Town ran out 4-0 winners against Shelbourne at Tolka Park, in the opening pre-season fixture.

Goals from Paul Anderson and Darren McQueen saw Blues edge in front at the break, before Tyrone Mings and Jack Marriott wrapped up the win with second-half strikes.

Mick McCarthy gave all of his players a run out, in a game that Town dominated from start to finish.

Paul Taylor looked lively for Town and he went close early on, twisting away from his marker in the box before seeing his cross turned behind for the first corner of the game.

Town were dominating the early proceedings and deservedly took the lead after 12 minutes, Alex Henshall laying the ball into the path of Anderson who swept into the corner from 20 yards.

Moments later, Taylor saw a free-kick deflected inches wide of the target before Blues doubled their lead midway through the second-half.

Taylor was again the instigator, robbing the defender in possession before rounding the ‘keeper and seeing the ball fall to McQueen who stabbed home from close range.

McQueen, who joined the Blues from Tottenham, was on the hunt for more goals and he went close twice in quick succession- first firing just over the bar and then being denied by point blank range by the Shelbourne stopper.

Despite Town’s dominance, ‘keeper Dean Gerken had to be at his very best to deny Sean McGrane with a fingertip save over the bar.

Mick McCarthy made 11 changes at the break, to allow all members of his squad a run out, including recent addition Cameron Stewart.

And the former Hull man certainly caught the eye as he set up Town’s third goal of the game, crossing for Mings to plant home a header into the top corner after 71 minutes.

The Blues extended their lead after 76 minutes as Jay Tabb fed Marriott who raced clear to lift the ball over the ‘keeper and in off the underside of the bar.

That was the way it finished as Town kicked off the pre-season programme on a winning note.

Town first-half XI: Gerken, Parr, Chambers, Smith, Wyatt, Anderson, Hyam, Wordsworth, Henshall, McQueen, Taylor.

Town second-half XI: Crowe, Hewitt, Clarke, Berra, Mings, Lawrence (Bishop 77), Skuse, Tabb, Stewart, Nouble, Marriott.
