Mick praise for trio in 'very good away performance'

Mick McCarthy hailed the win over Brighton as huge and had special praise for Jonny Williams and Daryl Murphy.

Murph grabbed his 10th goal of the season after the Crystal Palace loanee had set him up to add to Tommy Smith’s header on the hour as Blues celebrated a first win at the Amex Stadium.

“It was a huge win for us against a good side,” said the Town boss.

“This is a difficult place to come to, a fabulous place I might add. We did things right though. We defended when we had to and we took the chances that came our way. It was the reverse of last week against Wigan.

“They are a good side and we had to deal with a few things around the box but we did that and we had our fair share of chances as well. As an away performance, it was a very good one.

“Murph deserved his goal. He played up front on his own, held the ball up really well. He worked the channels and defended when he needed to. If he has played better, I’d like to see it.

“Jonny was excellent for us as well. He’s a very good player and he gives us something different. We haven’t got anyone like him.”

Anthony Wordsworth came in for his first League start this season, with Mick saying: “He deserved his chance.

“I have been really pleased with his attitude. He has worked very hard in training and in the U21s. He is technically a very good player but the challenge for him has been about doing the other side of the game, the tracking back and all that. He did that well today.

“He’s got to produce performances like that week in, week out. That’s what it is about, doing your job like our defenders have done for 35 games this season.”
