MATCH PREVIEW: TOWN V WOLVES

4 November 2014

Mick still holds fond memories of his time at Molinuex but admits he wants to send them home with nothing tonight

Mick McCarthy is relishing locking horns with one of his old clubs- but is hoping to be the one smiling come full time.

Town take on Wolves at Portman Road this evening, with Mick having spent six years in charge at Molineux and having steered the Midlanders into the Premier League.

The boss still holds the club close to his heart but admits his full focus is on all matters Town- including trying to follow up an impressive away win at Blackpool with another three points this evening.

“We go into the game on the back of a job well done at Blackpool and I’m looking forward to going up against Wolves, a club which is obviously close to my heart,” the gaffer explained to Ipswich Player.

“I spent six good, mainly successful years there and it was a good period in my career. I’d like to think it was a good period in the history of Wolves too, having got them promoted and staying in the Premier League for three years.

“I had a great time there and there is no bitterness or ill-feeling on my part towards the club on how it finished there for me. I’m fully focused on Ipswich now.

“It will be good to see a few of the lads from when I was there and I’ll be wishing them all the best- after the 90 minutes of course.

“Kenny Jackett has got a good, young, vibrant side there and they will be hoping to go top with a win, but we are only five points off that position ourselves so it’s a big 90 minutes ahead for both sides.”

Team news

Town will be without the services of five injured players for tonight’s clash against Mick’s former club, Wolves. Jonny Williams misses out with a calf injury, whilst Dean Gerken, Cole Skuse, Jonny Parr and Ted Bishop are all absent with groin problems. Elliott Hewitt is available for the Blues though, after being recalled from his loan spell at Colchester.

Wolves added to their squad before the game, with former Brighton and Manchester United stopper Tomasz Kuszczak joining on a short-term deal as a free agent. The Polish international is unlikely to start the game for Kenny Jackett’s side but could be named on the bench.

Christophe Berra. Scottish international who arrived at Portman Road on a free transfer in the summer of 2013 after leaving Wolves at the end of his contract, following their relegation to League One. The defender has become a key part of Mick McCarthy’s Town backline, just as he did at Molineux when the Blues boss signed him for Wolves from Hearts- the Club he supported as a boy. The move south of the border represented a first taste of English football for Christophe and he helped Wolves earn promotion to the top flight, before spending three years as a Premier League defender.
