GREAT TO BE TOP SAYS BOSS

18 August 2015

Roll on May as Blues lead the promotion chase and there is praise for Freddie

Mick McCarthy said ‘roll on May’ after Town went top of the Championship table after victory over Burnley at Portman Road.

Freddie Sears celebrated signing a new four year contract with the opener and David McGoldrick added a second to give Blues the three points.

“It’s a lovely feeling to be top of the league. Just 43 games to go now. Roll on May!” the Town boss told Ipswich Player HD.

“I can’t keep going on about that Brentford game but it still irks me. Not the performance, just those two goals. We should have been sitting here with nine points.

“We have reacted well from the disappointment of those goals though and won three on the trot.

“It was going to be who blinks first tonight. I said that to the lads at half-time and fortunately it was Burnley.

“It was a great goal from Freddie though. The movement and passing was excellent and it was a terrific finish.

“He has deserved that new contract. We got him for £100,000 from Colchester and he has ripped it up since he came here.

“He had a long contract anyway but fair play to Marcus [Evans, owner] for extending that and rewarding him for what he has achieved here. It’s a boost for Freddie and for the Club.”

Town have injury concerns over Daryl Murphy and Ryan Fraser after the 90 minutes. Murph was forced off at the break with a calf injury while Ryan limped off before that with a jarred knee.

“We will know more tomorrow but hopefully they are not too bad,” added Mick.
