Boss looks to add to squad as he combines temperament with talent

Mick McCarthy is still looking to add to his squad ahead of the transfer window closing at the end of the month.

The Town boss has brought in Brett Pitman, Giles Coke, Jonathan Douglas and Larsen Toure this summer, with Ryan Fraser and Ainsley Maitland-Niles arriving on year long loans.

Jonathan Henly signed a one year contract yesterday to add to the cover for goalkeepers Bart Bialkowski and Dean Gerken but Mick would like to bring in another new face or two.

“We haven’t got a big squad but we have got a strong squad, full of good players,” Mick told Ipswich Player HD.

“It’s possible that we will add to it before the window closes because it doesn’t take a lot of injuries to suddenly become threadbare.”

While the boss looks for a balance of temperament and talent with any additions to his squad, he also points out the importance of keeping the players out of the team involved.

“Me and TC get round them all, make sure we keep them all involved and talk to them because I’ve seen it before with players, they can be ostracised when they’re not playing,” added the boss.

“What you can’t do, as I say, is ostracise them and then just say ‘I need you know’ and put your arm around them. You have to keep them involved. That’s managing people as much as anything else.

“We have a squad of good professionals, good players and good people, nice people to be around, so there’s a great atmosphere around the place and I do take into account what kind of character they are when we look to bring in any new player.”
