But Didz out in long term injury as Blues face the 'real deal' in Derby

Mick McCarthy will have Luke Varney in his squad on Saturday to take on the team he considers arguably the best in the Championship but David McGoldrick faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Luke put pen to paper today on a contract that will keep him at Portman Road until the end of the season and he will be on the bench to face Derby.

“Reg is a terrific character and I’m delighted he has signed, so are the rest of the players,” the Town boss told Ipswich Player HD.

“He had a horrible injury at the end of last season, snapping his achilles but he stayed here to do his rehab and showed what a professional he is in the way he has conducted his rehab.

“He’s a great character as well and takes us back up to four strikers because we will be missing Didz for a while. He has suffered a really nasty tear in his hamstring. It’s a long term injury and very disappointing for him and for us obviously.”

Derby are third in the table while Blues are sixth and Mick sees the game as a big one.

“It’s definitely that. We’ve got some really big games coming up, starting with this one,” added the boss.

“They are arguably the best team in the league and having seen then, I think they are the real deal. I expect them to be right up there come the end of the season but they won’t exactly be rubbing their hands at the thought of coming here!”

A crowd of more than 20,000 is expected on Saturday, with the match the lead game on Channel 5’s coverage.
