Boss joins Simon Milton, Terry Butcher and Alan Lee in launching Club bid to have a 100 strong team for London to Amsterdam cycle challenge
Milts led close on 70 cyclists in the challenge in June - easily the biggest team from the Football League clubs involved - raising £85,000 for Prostate Cancer as well as £55,000 for the Academy.
Milts is targeting 100 cyclists next year, with the McCarthy family also getting involved for the charity, with Mick’s son, Michael, running the London Marathon for Prostate Cancer.
“I don’t know where that idea came from but it certainly wasn’t me!” joked the Town boss.
“It’s a fantastic cause and what Milts has done in being the driving force behind the cyclists is great. I hope as many as possible get involved. I’m sure there will be some great banter over the 250 odd miles as well!
“I love my cycling and I would have done the trip myself but June is holiday time for me. I wish everyone involved the best of luck though.”
As well as taking to the road to Amsterdam, Team Ipswich will also be heading to the home of AZ Alkmaar to take part in a friendly football match against their staff and fans 35 years on from the UEFA Cup final between the clubs.
Terry Butcher and Russell Osman, who were in the Town side that lifted the trophy in 1981, will be in the saddle for the ride, with fellow former European winners, Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen, planning to join in the fun somewhere along the journey.
The proposed itinerary is shown below.
Friday June 3 – Approx 8.30am - 100 Team ITFC cyclists leave Portman Road. After 41 miles in Suffolk/Essex they will join up with the L2A (London to Amsterdam) cyclists that start in London at lunchtime in Great Totham, then cycle the remaining 41 miles with them to Harwich. Overnight ferry trip to the Hook of Holland
Saturday June 4 – Cycle the 60 miles with the whole group to Amsterdam – Attend dinner in the hotel and enjoy a night out.
Sunday June 5 – TEAM ITFC cycle to the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam for 1981 UEFA Cup final photographs. Following the stadium visit, cycle to Alkmaar to visit their stadium and take part in a friendly match. Total cycling 37 miles. Overnight stay in a hotel in Alkmaar.
Monday June 6 – Cycle the approximate 65 very flat miles back to the Hook of Holland to catch the overnight ferry home to Harwich.
Tuesday June 7 – Arrive in Harwich at approximately 8am. Cycle to the finishing line at Portman Road. (23 miles)
