Luke Varney reflects on a frustrating loss to Derby County, where the forward made his long awaited return from injury
Luke Varney believes that Town did enough to get at least a point from Derby, and that it was one moment of luck that separated the sides on the day.
The striker made his return after over six months out with an Achilles injury as he replaced Jonathan Douglas, but despite the defeat, he is confident the result won’t play on their minds when QPR come calling next weekend.
“We’re in a good place, and on a good run so this result won’t affect us going into the Boxing Day game,” he told Ipswich Player HD after the 1-0 loss.
“We’ve had days, like at Rotherham, where we’ve blitzed teams but in these big games all it takes is a little bit of luck at times. Fortunately for them Bez [Berra] has put a tackle in, it’s ricocheted, and they’ve got in so they’ve had that luck today.
“People may think it was about me today getting back out on the pitch but the ultimate aim was to get the points so it’s disappointing.
“Maybe we didn’t have enough nous in certain areas and we’ve probably not applied ourselves so we could have nicked a point. We’re disappointed but we feel that we’ve put a good shift in and we can look forward to another big game now.”
