GAME WAS DAMP SQUIB

14 January 2015

Boss disappointed Town didn't test Saints more in cup exit

Mick McCarthy was disappointed that Town’s test against Premier League Southampton ended in a damp squib.

Shane Long’s goal was enough to give Saints the victory in front of the biggest Town gate in four years and the live BBC cameras.

“I was happy with the way we played for the first 19 minutes until they scored their goal,” the Town boss told the Club website.

“I have not seen their goal yet on TV but they caught on the break and it was a good finish.

“They gave us very few chances after that. They have only conceded 15 goals in the Premier League against much better teams than us.

“The conditions didn’t help the game. The pitch was soft, the wind was blowing a gale and the ball was light and bouncing around everywhere.

“I was disappointed that we didn’t do more in the game. It was a damp squib really but they deserve credit for the way they saw out of the game.”
