MATCH PREVIEW: TOWN V WIGAN

30 January 2015

Skipper says the lads are 'raring to go' as the Blues get set for Portman Road clash with the Latics

  • Chambers: "We're raring to go"
  • McGoldrick could be boost for Town
  • Gerken and Hyam still sidelined

Luke Chambers has told the Club website that Town are ‘raring to go again’ against Wigan tomorrow, after a free weekend last Saturday.

Town’s game against Brighton was brought forward to the Wednesday due to the Seagulls being in FA Cup action, with the Blues slipping to a 3-2 defeat at The Amex Stadium that night.

Manager Mick McCarthy gave his squad a few days off and skipper Chambers has revealed that the training levels have been very sharp this week, as we prepare to welcome Wigan to Portman Road tomorrow afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

“We’ve had a good week’s training ahead of tomorrow’s game and obviously we want to put the disappointing defeat to Brighton behind us,” said Luke in his captain’s column for the official matchday programme.

“I didn’t think we were at our best that night and we definitely know where we went wrong. We want to put that behind us though and we are raring to go again back at Portman Road.

“It’s going to be a tough encounter against a side that, for me, are surprisingly down the bottom end of the table. They have got a good manager and some very good players so it’s going to be a battle, with them fighting for their lives, but one we are looking forward to.

“It’s a long season and we were given a little bit of break recently [after the Brighton game], because we didn’t have a match last weekend. The gaffer told us before the Brighton game that win, lose or draw- we would be off.

“You do need that rest and recuperation when it comes along but at the same time, the lads are raring to go again and we’ve seen that from training this week. We’re ready for the test and looking forward to being back out there”

You can read more from the skipper in the matchday programme, priced at just £3 and available from kiosks around the stadium.

Team news

Town should be boosted by the return of David McGoldrick to the squad, after the striker took part in training this week following a brief spell on the sidelines with injury. Freddie Sears will be hoping to play a part in what would be his home debut, after netting his first goal for the Club against Brighton last time out. Dean Gerken (hip) and Luke Hyam (knee) are still sidelined for Town.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay has seen wholesale changes to his squad this past week, with Ben Watson (Watford), Shaun Maloney (Chicago Fire), Callum McManaman (West Brom) and Ivan Ramis (Levente) amongst the players to have left the DW Stadium recently. Chris Herd has checked in from Aston Villa and he could be set for a Lactics debut at Portman Road.
