PREVIEW: SOUTHAMPTON V TOWN

2 January 2015

McGoldrick relishing trip to former club Southampton as Town prepare to kick off FA Cup campaign on the south cast

David McGoldrick is relishing the prospect of facing his former club Southampton, should he get the nod from manager Mick McCarthy.

The Town boss has confirmed that he will make changes to his Town side for the third round FA Cup clash, with McGoldrick hoping he can face the club he spent five years at earlier in his career.

“I spent five good years at Southampton and it’s a great club, so it will be nice to go back there,” Didz told Ipswich Player.

“It’s a bit different to when I left there, but no doubt there are still a lot of the same people there and it will be nice to see a few familiar faces.

“It should be a good game as well and we just want to keep the good form going. The gaffer might decide to make a few changes but all the boys will be ready to do a job if called upon.

“We’re taking a lot of fans which is nice to hear and it should be a good atmosphere and a great occasion down at St Mary’s.”

Team news

Tyrone Mings will be hoping to make his return to the Town side after being sidelined recently with a toe injury and could line up against the team that released him as a youngster. Dean Gerken could come back into the side in place of Bartosz Bialkowski, although the Polish stopper will be keen to face his former club. Luke Hyam is also likely to be in contention for a place in the squad after shaking off an Achilles injury.

Following Ronald Koeman’s side’s win over Arsenal, the Dutch boss may make a number of changes to his side ahead of the FA Cup clash. Former Blues stopper Kelvin Davis is still on the books at Southampton, but is unlikely to feature against Town on Sunday.

Last time we met

The last time Blues faced off against the Saints on the south coast was back in 2012, as Nigel Adkins’ side plotted their way to the Premier League. Paul Jewel’s Town came away with a creditable 1-1 draw at St Mary’s, with Jason Scotland cancelling out Rickie Lambert’s opener for the Saints.

Tickets

Town have sold out their allocation of more than 5,000 and there will be no tickets available on the day, so please don’t travel without a ticket. The home side have also sold out their allocation.
