Friends reunited as Town head to Fortuna for friendly that gets backing from fans of both clubs
Fortuna were relegated from the Bundesliga in 2013 and now play in the second tier of German football.
They have twice finished as German champions and have also lifted the national cup on two occasions. They also finished runners-up in the European Cup-Winners’ Cup in 1979.
Over recent years a relationship has built up between fans of Town and Fortuna that has seen members of the Blue Army travel to Germany to watch Dusseldorf in action, while
Fortuna fans have made two or three trips a season to Portman Road, with 200 of them at the game against Derby in January.
“What fantastic news!” ITFC Supporters’ Club chair Liz Edwards told the Club website.
“We have welcomed so many Fortuna fans to Ipswich, and many Town fans have already made a trip over to Germany.
“It has been a dream for a long time to see the clubs in action together - as well as being a great excuse for a trip and a party.
“I was over there last September and the passion for getting a match organised was plain to see. The Fortuna Blues branch of the ITFC Supporters Club has worked so hard to get this game to happen and we will be working together to organise fan activities, in town and at the stadium. There will even be an after-match party at a nearby bar and disco.
“It's easy to get to - there are flights from many airports to Dusseldorf and nearby Cologne, boat and train via Harwich and Eurostar via Brussels. If you take the car, it's only four hours from Calais to Dusseldorf, and just over three hours from Hook of Holland.”
