Hat-trick hero Murphy delighted to get up and running for the season but admits he always had confidence in his ability to hit the goals for the Blues

A revitalised Daryl Murphy has admitted he always believed the goals would start flowing for him- once he got off the mark.

The striker netted a superb hat-trick as Town cruised to an impressive 5-2 win over Rotherham at the New York stadium, with Brett Pitman and Jonathan Douglas also on target.

“In the last few games I’d had some chances, but I knew it would be a case of getting that first one and then more would come,” he told Ipswich Player HD.

“I didn’t think I would get a hat-trick but I could have had five on another day with the chances I’ve had but I will take the three.

“I mis-hit the first one and if I had caught it cleanly it probably wouldn’t have gone in, but it got me up and running for the season and it was what I needed to get going.

“The lads were delighted for me because they know how disappointed I was not to have scored yet already but it just shows how close-knit we are as a group.

“It wouldn’t have been nice to go into the international break having not picked up the three points but we came here and did what we needed to do so the lads can enjoy their break now.

“We were different class all over the park and we need to take this performance into the next game, after the international break.”
