McDonnell nets from the spot but young Blues are held by the Addicks this afternoon
Town’s U21 side were held to a 1-1 draw with Charlton today, at VCD Athletic.
The Blues took the lead through Adam McDonnell, who slotted home a first-half penalty, before the Addicks hit back through Chris Miller to claim a share of the spoils.
Mark Kennedy’s side got off to the perfect start, opening the scoring after just four minutes from the spot following a handball. McDonnell stepped up and fired beyond Dimitar Mitov in the Charlton goal.
Michael Crowe was kept busy in the Town goal though and he made two fine saves to deny Josh Staunton and then Sam Bone.
Just after the restart, Cemal Ramadan forced Mitov into a low save before Crowe and Kyle Hammond combined to keep out Josh Umerah at the back-post for Charlton.
However the hosts did draw level shortly before the hour mark, as Miller converted a Mikhail Kennedy pull back after he had been expertly teed up by Alex Kelly in midfield.
Dylan Connolly headed an effort wide for the Blues before Town were let off the hook in injury time as substitute Brandon Hanlan worked his way into the area but saw his effort bounce back off the woodwork.
Town: Crowe, Hammond, Robinson, Fowler, Kenlock, McDonnell, Benyu, Ramadan (Downes 55), Connolly (Ford 77), Henshall, Alabi. Subs not used: Marsden, Salaudeen, McKendry.
